Earned media is a primary channel through which Thorn furthers our brand and business goals. The Communications Director’s role spans nearly every area of the organization to develop and distribute the stories that advance our mission. The Director of Communications will be responsible for:
Ensure the absolute integrity of the organization’s reputation in the media
Equip internal and external stakeholders with clear and consistent messages that enable them to carry Thorn’s work forward
Advance Thorn’s business goals with strategic press, event and conference opportunities
Raise awareness and consideration for Thorn products among technology industry decision makers
Elevating Thorn’s Thought Leadership at the Intersection of Child Protection and Technology
Promote communications around local, national and international policies that support Thorn’s work to protect children.
The Director of Communications is part of Thorn’s External Affairs department and reports to the Vice President of External Affairs. This unique role works closely with all cross-functional partners to support our three verticals: enabling victim identification, equipping tech companies, and empowering youth & amp; the communities that support them.
The Director of Communications will join a passionate, dynamic, innovative and ambitious team committed to doing whatever it takes to end child sexual abuse. The right candidate is highly collaborative, a native of technology and media, and ready to use their professional experience to make a significant social impact.
What will you do:
Develop, monitor and implement a strategic media relations plan to directly serve the industry and cross-functional partners to achieve Thorn’s key business objectives in alignment with annual marketing & amp; Communications plan.
Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with consumers, technology, issues, and the political press. Drive a proactive strategy throughout the year to secure high-value placements for Thorn at key issue-related media and events.
Develop and maintain clear and transparent metrics to track the effectiveness of media relations efforts in advancing business goals.
Develop and implement a robust set of tools to inform and train internal and external teams, including:
News monitoring and analysis
Proactive Messaging Manual
Crisis communications protocol
Synthesize complex issues related to Thorn’s work to bring diverse audiences, including technology leaders, policy makers, NGOs and the general public, to action.
Manage incoming press requests, make recommendations on media engagement, write talking points, inform participants, and manage all press pieces via location, including impact tracking.
Develop press announcements, releases, internal communications, executive / spokesperson briefs, and monitor various press events.
Make sure our key messages, narratives, and FAQs are tailored to different audiences.
Plan and manage the agency’s resources in the execution of placements and press events.
Secure strategic conference opportunities and appearances for key executives and spokespersons at high-profile events in the US and internationally.
Plan and supervise press visits and other in-person press cultivation opportunities.
Manage crisis communications as needed, maintaining a current risk analysis and crisis communications plan on key issues.
Support cross-functional leaders by addressing the communication needs of each role and understanding the key role each plays in the overall success of Thorn.
What are we looking for:
An unwavering commitment to putting the children we serve at the center of everything you do.
Over 10 years of media relations experience with the ability to quickly learn new topics and industries.
Strong proven relationships with major news outlets, including print, digital, and broadcast media.
Ability to communicate complex topics in a simple, accessible and compelling way.
Impeccable writing, editing, presentation and oral communication skills.
Experience working cross-functional in a product / service driven organization where communication results are directly linked to business metrics.
Experience in managing agencies and creative resource needs to achieve business goals on a limited budget.
Experience in the successful planning and execution of communication plans at the product and brand level.
Experience in the technology sector, with experience / knowledge in government affairs as an advantage.
Experience working in startups, early growth and high growth companies.
Calm, resourceful, and critical thinker who thrives on problem solving in an agile, fast-paced team.
